Personally I believe you might need to understand the sentence with content. As far as I see, the original sentence is quoted  from "The Merchant of Venice" by Shakespeare: "It's a wise father that knows his own child", where Launcelot Gobbo meets his "sand-blind" father who does not recognise his own son.

Apparently we have another way to translate this sentence here.
My idea is that you don't really have to worry about how to understand that sentence, and you will get it when it is used.

I just feel  that some of them are really weird,

the structure of sentances is simple, but they easily cause misunderstanding if not concentrate....

Most sentences are not confusing. If students do study hard in university, they won't fail to figure out the meaning.

Some sentences are  very interesting!
